Outstanding Older Adult Award 2022

FPC celebrates the Lehmans by nominating them for the 2022 Outstanding Older Adult Award

by Rob Jackson on May 18, 2022

Bill and Alison Lehman are an outstanding team of dedicated disciples who have been hard at work for decades at First Presbyterian Church in Greenville. Though both have held many positions of service and leadership, the most outstanding attribute is their selfless attitude and consistency when it comes to helping others. Every week one or both of them can be found filling a need, whether it is serving as ushers, making our flower beds look pretty, or stepping up for someone who is out of town. The Lehmans work diligently behind the scenes and never seek the spotlight. The Older Adult Ministry Team was thrilled to nominate them to the session as joint recipients of this award, and the Session enthusiastically nominated them to the Presbytery.

Some of Bill’s many contributions have been to serve as a Stephen Minister and as a Stephen Minister leader, assist in the administration of the Mary Sorensen Fund to renovate the sanctuary and add our beautiful organ, assist in the design of the columbarium, and develop columbarium policies and administration. One of the most notable things Bill does is to send a birthday card to every member of FPC, no small task! Bill has served on Session and has twice served as a Ministry (Committee) leader. Bill helped establish our homebound communion program. He serves as an usher, house church leader, and has served on various Congregational Nominating Committees, as well as a search committee for our office staff. Bill is of enormous help with our Mayfest for Missions project, providing logistics, travel, and muscle for important work. Bill is a key volunteer to maintain the grounds of FPC and to equip others who do the same. Recently, Bill envisioned a new nativity scene for the church and organized its construction, painting, and installation. In the community he has served as Chairman of Board of Adjustments for City of Greenville, Chairman of Planning & Zoning Commission for City of Greenville, President of Lions Club, and President of PTA, Elmhurst Elementary School.

Alison has played in the Westminster Chimes Bell Choir, participated in the Prayers and Squares quilting ministry, is an active usher and is a vital member of her house church. Alison volunteers with Meals on Wheels and is essential in the upkeep of the gardens at FPC. She put in many hours helping with the sanding and painting of our new nativity scene. Alison is a member of PW’s Cypress Glen circle and regularly attends Sunday School.  Alison is a constant presence helping with the Neighbor to Neighbor program and also Mayfest for Community Outreach. She also assists the Office Administrator by volunteering in the office and serving as an Address Angel, helping with FPC’s monthly mailings. She has also served as a Deacon. When Alison moved to Greenville in 1986, she began work as a Speech Pathologist in the Early Intervention Program (home-based birth to 3) and United Cerebral Palsy Developmental Center (Center-based birth to 5) and continued that work until she focused on raising their children.

Bill and Alison are gifts from God to the Body of Christ at First Presbyterian Church of Greenville, NC and we are truly blessed to have them.
